Requiem for the Living
for Chorus and Chamber Orchestra by Dan Forrest
Katrina will be singing the soprano solo in the Boston premier of this work with Dedham Choral Society.
American composer Dan Forrest (born 1978) continues to be one of the most significant choral composers of his generation, with works characterized by great lyricism and exuberant rhythmic vitality. This not-to-be-missed concert will open with two shorter pieces, “The Music of Living” and “You Are the Music,” followed by the powerful “Requiem for the Living,” a five-movement composition scored for chorus, organ and chamber ensemble (violin, cello, flute, oboe, horn, harp and percussion). Completed in 2012, it has been described by its composer as a “narrative for the living and their own struggle with pain and sorrow.” The musical setting of the text “heavens, full of glory” was inspired by images of space taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and photos of Earth as seen from the International Space Station. In every performance the “Requiem” elicits profound reaction from both performers and audience, with hopes for light, rest and peace.

Tchaikovsky's Maid of Orleans with Odyssey Opera
The Maid of Orléans represents Tchaikovsky’s closest approach to French grand opera with its large-scale cast and orchestra. Presented in concert the opera tells the tale of Joan of Arc. While the composer’s libretto remains true to much of the Joan legend, including her visions, strength in battle and fiery martyrdom, this lush romantic work also tells the story of a conflicted Father who ultimately betrays her and of her love for Lionel, a Burgundian Knight. Tchaikovsky’s impassioned score creates a nuanced musical portrait of the intrepid young woman who led the French army to victory.
Katrina will be singing as part of the angel chorus for this one-night only concert performance in Jordan Hall.
